Victor Sanchez is the new coach of NK Olimpija Ljubljana!

Former Real Madrid player Victor Sanchez del Amo has joined the Green-White squad ahead of the 2024/25 season!

The Spanish coach has an enviable playing career, which started in Real Madrid’s youth teams. After breaking into the first team, he made 80 appearances for the most trophy-laden club in Champions League history, and in Madrid, in the company of greats like Roberto Carlos, Raul, Seedorf, he won the Champions League, the league title and the Super Cup. He later made a big mark at Deportivo La Coruna, where he made 277 appearances, scoring 42 goals and 18 assists in seven years, winning one league and cup title and two Super Cup titles.

In total, Sanchez has over 300 games and 49 goals in La Liga, representing Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna, in addition to Racing, Elche and Panathinaikos. He has 45 appearances and five goals in the elite Champions League, which he won with Real in 1998 under the legendary Jupp Heynckes. Also in 1998, Victor Sanchez won the U21 EURO title with the young Spain national team, and went on to make eight appearances for the national team.

The 48-year-old started his coaching career in 2010. He has worked as an assistant coach at Getafe, Sevilla and Olympiakos. In Greece, he was instrumental in winning two league titles, a cup trophy and reaching the quarter-finals of the elite Champions League. Later, as head coach, he managed five clubs – Deportivo La Coruna (50 games), Real Betis (27 games), Malaga (33 games), and briefly took charge of Olympiakos (two games) and, in LaLiga 2, Cartagena. Most recently, he was an advisor to the Spanish national youth teams.

The newly appointed Olimpija strategist has signed a one-year contract with the club, with the possibility of extending it for an additional year. The team will be assembled for the first time on 17. June, when the Dragons will start their preparations for the new season. The new Dragons’ strategist will be presented to the media at a press conference to be held in July, when the Green-Whites’ competition commitments will officially start. We would like to add that the refreshed technical staff will be fully known by the opening training session.
