Tone Rožič

Tone Rožič

What Paolo Maldini was for AC Milan, Tone Rožič was for Olimpija. It is true that he didn’t play as a defender, but as an attacker. However, he spent his entire career, both in the youth and senior teams, among the dragons. The boy from Nove Jarše remained loyal to Olimpija even when the cult Crvena zvezda wanted to lure him to their ranks as one of the best football players in Yugoslavia.

How good he was is also shown by the fact that he was a member of both the cadet and youth Yugoslav national team. He played in the finals of the youth and member cups of Yugoslavia. He wore the Olimpija jersey for 14 long seasons, surpassed in this aspect only by Vili Ameršek. In the history of Olimpija, there were few such loyal footballers as Tone Rožič, who could have left Ljubljana several times, but never did.

After the end of his career, he withdrew from the public eye, although he coached young footballers at NK Šmartno, but never returned to Olimpija. Except as a spectator. Tone Rožič died in 2011 at the age of 60 from the consequences of a serious illness.
