Captain reacts

The last Eternal Derby of the season was abandoned early due to crowd trouble caused by Maribor supporters. Despite numerous warnings during two stoppages, the situation did not calm down, so the referee brought the match to an end.

Dragons captain Matevž Vidovšek: “What was happening already in the first half continued in the second. Maribor fans started firing Roman candles at me, and one of them went off right next to my ear, which started ringing and pounding. We understand everything. Flares and the fan atmosphere, all great – but targeting players, me, Ristić, Gorenc, I think that’s completely inappropriate. Our health is at risk too; if it had hit me in the eye, I could have gone blind! I don’t think that’s right.”

“I’ve said several times that it’s bad for the Slovenian league that Maribor, together with us, are so low down. Maybe we need to look in the mirror and see that this is our reality and that we’re no longer at the forefront. We have to do everything so that both we and they change something next season. We know we have to be higher up, fight for Europe, and I think that’s how it should be.”

“Everything has been and will be down to us. So many times this season it was on us – when we could have won and closed the gap to Celje, we drew with Mura. Then we could have got close again, but we lost to Bravo. It was always on us, but we didn’t take that step. Next season starts from zero again. We know Olimpija must be first – champions, Europe – and we keep building.”
