Branko Oblak
One of the best Slovenian footballers of all time, one of the best Olimpija players of all time and a club legend in every possible way. Branko Oblak, a midfielder by football education, wore the Olimpija jersey for eight seasons and left a mark that few others have. Among other achievements, he made history as the only teenager to debut for Olimpija in the first Yugoslav league with a goal. He made his debut in 1965 under the guidance of Branko Elsner, and today, he can proudly claim to be one of the few Olimpija players to have scored goals against Hajduk, Partizan, Crvena zvezda, and Maribor during his career.
He bid farewell to Olimpija in 1973 and signed with Hajduk, where he stayed for only two years. In Germany, he also played for Schalke and Bayern, with whom he won the national championship. He concluded his career in the lower leagues of Austria. He wore the Yugoslav national team jersey 46 times and played in both the World Cup and the European Championship.
In 1974, together with Danilo Popivoda, he became the first Slovenian to appear in a World Cup. In the match against DR Congo, he also scored a goal, and by the end of the tournament, he was selected to the best XI! He later returned to Olimpija as a coach and sat on its bench during four different periods. Overall, he managed the team in 60 matches, winning 31 of them.
In the 1994/95 season, he led the Dragons to the national championship title, and in 2009, under his guidance, Jan Oblak made his debut in the Slovenian First League. He was also the coach of the Slovenian senior national team, and on the 50th anniversary of its establishment, the European Football Association (UEFA) selected him as the best Slovenian footballer of all time.
