Coach
Victor Sanchez del Amo is a former Spanish footballer who began his football journey in the renowned youth academy of Real Madrid. He was a member of all the youth teams and progressed through the C and B teams to the senior squad, where he made 65 appearances and scored 7 goals. With Real Madrid, he won La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the prestigious UEFA Champions League, where they defeated Juventus 1-0 in the final with a goal from Mijatović. At that time, Real Madrid had an exceptional team, with teammates including Raúl, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Redondo, Clarence Seedorf, and Davor Šuker.
After two seasons in the white shirt, he moved to Racing Santander, where his impressive performances (12 goals) earned him a transfer to Deportivo La Coruña. He played for the club for seven years, leaving his mark in the history of this Spanish club. In the 1999/00 season, they won their first and only La Liga title in history, followed by the Spanish Cup the next season. In fierce competition, they also won two Spanish Super Cups, and in the 2000/01 season, they made an impact in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the quarterfinals in their debut season in the competition. Towards the end of his career, he tried playing abroad for the first time, joining Greek giants Olympiacos. His final season saw him return to Spain, playing for Elche. Sanchez del Amo earned eight caps for the Spanish national team, and in 1998, he helped Spain’s U21 team win the European Championship title.
After retiring from playing, he turned to coaching, initially gaining experience as an assistant coach in Spanish teams Getafe and Sevilla. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Olympiacos. In the 2015/16 season, he had his first experience as a head coach at Deportivo La Coruña. Later, he worked as a coach at several prestigious clubs, including Olympiacos, Betis, and Malaga. After a brief stint at Spanish second-division club Cartagena, he became the head coach of NK Olimpija Ljubljana in the 2024/2025 season. Under his leadership, the club qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League. With exceptional results, Olimpija reached the knockout stages of a European competition for the first time in its history.
Victor Sánchez del Amo achieved remarkable results as the head coach of Olimpija, setting several historic milestones for the club. He became the first coach in Olimpija’s history to remain unbeaten in the first 17 consecutive matches of a season, across three different competitions: the domestic league, the cup, and Europe. Additionally, during the first half of the league season, Olimpija, under his leadership, conceded only 6 goals, marking a historic achievement for the club during that period. Sánchez also became the third Olimpija coach to win every possible opening match in all competitions (league, cup, Europe).
