Danilo Popivoda

Danilo Popivoda

Danilo Popivoda started his football career in Montenegro, then moved to Ljubljana and became completely ours. Very popular with everyone because of its specific characteristics and abilities. He has never shown signs of fatigue. But he was a dribbler, a scorer, an assistant on many goals. His penetrating runs down the right side and accurate crosses into the penalty area were typical. But if he was at the very tip of the attack, he needed to send the right pass deep and, more often than not, a successful finish. His goal against Germany for the Yugoslav national team at the 1976 European Championship in Belgrade will remain unforgettable. A long pass from his club teammate Branko Oblak, a full-field reception and the ball was in the net. The many independent actions and conclusions were a quality that could not be overlooked. Most of the time, he was irresistible. Many of the goals he scored for Olimpija and the Slovenian national team were outstanding and very important.

He has also had a bit of bad luck playing abroad. Ankle injuries have become an integral part of his career. As he could tell, there was no mercy abroad. He had to play many games with the help of painkilling injections. This, in his opinion, also had an impact on his deteriorating eyesight. He was a teammate of Branko Oblak in Olimpija and in the Yugoslav national team.

Due to his knowledge and attitude towards work, he has also been an assistant coach in Olimpija and in the Slovenian national team several times. He was also an independent coach in some Slovenian clubs. He will be remembered primarily as a player. Although he did not have such a successful period as a coach, many will remember and respect him in this role also, as a tireless worker on the field. He simply did not know how to give in. Due to his correct, professional attitude, he became a role model for many on the field.
