Marko Elsner
Marko Elsner belongs to a group of exceptional Slovenian players. He started at NK Slovan, but soon moved to Bežigrad. From Olimpija he went to Belgrade to Crvena zvezda in 1983. In 1987 he transferred to French Nice. In between he also played for Austrian Admira and returned to Nice where he ended his career in 1993. He was also a standard representative of Yugoslavia. Even younger, he was also a member of the young Yu national team, with which he also achieved exceptional success, 3rd place at the Olympic Games. He was also called up to the Slovenian national team twice, on its initial, independent path. A sophisticated central defender, although he came to this position more by chance, as he was primarily a midfielder. But he achieved the most in this playing position. He read the game (the ideas of opposing attackers) and was very successful in interrupting the opponents’ attack at decisive moments. He also knew how to quickly organize a counterattack in the best possible way after taking the ball away. When joining the attack, he also had successful finishes, which is why he has quite a few goals scored in his column. In short. A very versatile and technically highly skilled player.
He never decided to be a coach. However, he was ready to participate in other ways related to football. Due to his rich career and unique attitude in all fields (not only sports), he was extremely popular and respected. Although he changed quite a few clubs, he will always remain richly written in the sports history of Ljubljana and Slovenia. Olimpija remained a club that he respected very much until his death.
He was also one of the founders of the Sports Association Veterans of NK Olimpija, where he advocated that any former player who ever played for Olimpija, in any selection, and also all former biggest supporters of Olimpija could become a member of the association.
