The first eternal derby of the 2025/26 season went to Olimpija with a well-deserved 1-0 victory. The first key moment occurred in the 22nd minute when Benjamin Tetteh missed a penalty after an excellent save by Matevž Dajčar. Just seven minutes later, the Dragons took the lead. Marko Brest set up Jošt Urbančič, who with exceptional dribbling took Marko Španring out of the game and then finished brilliantly with a right-footed shot into the far corner. Olimpija was also the better team on the field in the second half and deservedly earned three more points.
After the match, the goalscorer told the TV cameras: “The derby is the biggest match in Slovenia. Scoring my debut goal for Olimpija in this particular match means a great deal to me. It was a tough and intense game, which is completely expected for a derby. It was important that we were strong in duels from the start and won the first few. We needed to show that we’re playing at home and that we have the desire to win the match. We managed to do that, which led us to the desired result.”
Dragons’ coach Erwin van de Looi also emphasized the importance of support from the stands: “Today, I must first praise the atmosphere in the stadium. The fans were excellent, and that’s exactly what we needed. Perhaps this wasn’t our best game with the ball, but we showed an exceptional attitude, fighting spirit, and team unity. From this perspective, it was our best game so far. Now we need to build on this and continue successfully after the international break.”
After the break, Olimpija will travel to face Radomlje. The next home challenge is scheduled a week later when the Dragons will clash against city rivals Bravo.
