Today, Olimpija faces one of the most important matches of the season, as they head to Arena Egnatia to fight for a place in the Conference League qualification play-offs. Before yesterday’s official training, our new head coach Erwin van de Looi shared a few words with the media, ahead of his first match in charge of the Dragons tonight.
He shared his first impressions of leading the team: “”I’m positively surprised by the team. We’ve only had two training sessions together, but I’m very satisfied with what I’ve seen. I also watched last week’s match and I think Olimpija should have won it, especially due to the missed penalty. The return leg will be demanding for both teams, but I believe in our success.””
He expects a similar Egnatia as in the first match: “”I expect our opponents to sit back a bit deeper again and then try to get the ball to their forwards as quickly as possible, but we’ll see. We’re prepared for this scenario and also for them to press us higher up the pitch.””
He also revealed the key point for success in today’s match: “”The most important thing will be to be effective in attack and score a goal. We already had numerous opportunities and a penalty in the first match. In these types of games, you need the first goal because it somewhat opens up the opponent, who then needs a goal to get back into it. This would offer us more space with our attacking play as well.””
