Zeljković: ”We beat ourselves”

The Green and Whites failed in the Faroe Islands. In the third match of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage, Klaksvik won with 3:0. First two goals we saw in the first half, the home team scored the final goal just after the break.

After Olimpija’s heavy defeat, head coach Zoran Zeljković said: “The fans are disappointed and I completely understand them. What hurts me the most is that we knew the way Klaksvik was playing, but we still did very badly. We beat ourselves. In Europe you have to take your chances. We had the best one in the game right at the start, but we didn’t take it. No matter what, you can lose a match, but we simply shouldn’t allow ourselves to lose a match like that. We made too many mistakes. It is no excuse that Klaksvik are used to the situation. We had enough chances to score, but on the other hand we were not good enough in the duels and on the second balls. We still have a lot of work to do.”

“I expected us to press better when they built their attack. We also knew that the opponent would be in low block most of the time. I don’t like the way we are playing yet. You can lose in different ways, but this one hurts a lot. We saw a lot of individual mistakes, including tactical ones. We are very disappointed. We have no choice but to accept it and move on. The result always makes you smart.”

“I understand the fans. Absolutely. They told us the truth that the opposition’s players mostly go to work and we are professionals, but they beat us easily. We cannot allow that. We have to accept criticism. We have another championship match coming up soon. It is up to us to respond and give our best.”
