The History of Olimpija Under Adam Delius

On October 1, 2021, German businessman Adam Delius became the majority owner of NK Olimpija Ljubljana, acquiring nearly three-quarters of the company FC Olimpija d.o.o. His arrival marked a significant turning point in the club’s structure. Extensive changes were initiated, focusing on financial stability, organizational restructuring, and the club’s overall sports development.

The first, inaugural season under the leadership of Adam Delius was marked by transformation on many levels.

Olimpija finished the Slovenian PrvaLiga in 3rd place and was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Slovenian Cup by Koper. Following Adam Delius’ takeover, Dino Skender replaced Savo Milošević as head coach. However, Skender was dismissed in March 2022. The coaching role was then handed to Robert Prosinečki, a popular former Olimpija player, who guided the team through the remainder of the season. This period marked a transitional phase for the club as it sought to stabilize under new management.

In the summer of 2022, Spanish coach Albert Riera joined the club. Under his leadership, Olimpija made visible rapid progress in terms of results. Olimpija ended the European season in the second round of qualifying for the UEFA European Conference League (UECL), but on their home turf, the club concluded the season by winning the “double crown”: they won the national Championship title and the Slovenian Cup. This was the club’s greatest success after the 2017/18 season, when Igor Bišćan won the double crown. At that time, Olimpija played attractive and organized football, which impressed the Slovenian football public.

At the beginning of the 2023/24 season, Portuguese João Henriques took over as coach. His greatest achievement was Olimpija’s historic breakthrough into the group stage of the UEFA European Conference League. After a victory over the Latvian Valmiera and an unforgettable duel with Ludogorets, decided by Timi captain Max Elšnik in the 92nd minute, Olimpija made it to the European group stage of the competition for the first time in its history!

In the group, they faced Lille, Klaksvík and Slovan Bratislava and finished in 3rd place. After poor results at home, Henriques was replaced in October 2023 by Zoran Zeljković from Ljubljana, who led the team until the end of the season. Olimpija finished 3rd in the championship, but its European appearances brought the club its greatest international success to that point.

In June 2024, Spaniard Víctor Sánchez del Amo took over as coach. Under his leadership, Olimpija excelled in the UECL qualifiers, defeating Ukrainian FC Polissya, Moldovan Sheriff Tiraspol, and Croatian Rijeka, who were beaten by an impressive 5:0 in a sold-out Stožice! Olimpija once again qualified for the group stage of the European competition.

In the revised competition system, the draw determined that Olimpija would face German Heidenheim, Austrian LASK, Finnish HJK, Northern Irish Larne FC, Belgian Cercle Brugge and Polish Jagiellonia. Olimpija ended the first half of the season as the autumn champion in the domestic championship, thus consolidating its position among the best teams in Slovenia. On the European stage, with resounding victories and quality performances, it reached another historical milestone, as it wintered in Europe and qualified for the additional qualifications of the UECL competition!

This improved their previous international success and showed that they can compete equally with stronger European opponents. In the additional qualifiers, Olimpija will face a regionally attractive opponent, FK Borac Banja Luka, which will certainly attract a lot of attention from football fans in the region. This match represents another opportunity for Olimpija to continue its successful European story and break through to the top teams in the competition.
