2023
Double Crown and Europe for the first time
In the summer of 2022, Spanish coach Albert Riera joined the club. Under his leadership, Olimpija made visible rapid progress in terms of results. Olimpija ended the European season in the second round of qualifying for the UEFA European Conference League (UECL), but on their home turf, the club concluded the season by winning the “double crown”: they won the national championship title and the Slovenian Cup!
This was the club’s biggest success since the 2017/18 season, when Igor Bišćan won the double. At that time, Olimpija played attractive and organized football, which impressed the Slovenian football public.
At the beginning of the 2023/24 season, Portuguese João Henriques took over as coach. His greatest achievement was Olimpija’s historic breakthrough into the group stage of the UEFA European Conference League. After a victory over the Latvian Valmiera and an unforgettable duel with Ludogorets, decided by Timi captain Max Elšnik in the 92nd minute, Olimpija made it to the European group stage of the competition for the first time in its history!
In the group, they faced Lille, Klaksvík and Slovan Bratislava and finished in 3rd place. After poor results at home, Henriques was replaced in October 2023 by Zoran Zeljković from Ljubljana, who led the team until the end of the season. Olimpija finished 3rd in the championship, but its European appearances brought the club its greatest international success to that point.
